I’m glad I had been invited to join the RTHK’s radio Channel 3 Teen Time’s competition with the theme of Unsung Hero. We won the Top Ten Broadcast Award with the topic about the African American women who joined NASA to build rockets. After winning the award, the hosts of Teen Time, Alyson and Judd, came to our school to give on-campus training and we were offered a guided tour to RTHK. The most remarkable experience for me was visiting RTHK’s office. There were a variety of broadcasting rooms with DJs working inside. Their equipment was advanced and their radio performances were brilliant. It was such a memorable experience. From this competition, I’ve learnt that being a DJ is not only about reading from the script, but it involves practicing thousands of times behind the spotlight. What a great experience I had!

Last year, some schoolmates and I joined a radio competition named Teen Time: Unsung Hero. The competition was organized by RTHK and its main target group was Hong Kong teenagers. At that time, they were running a special Campus Radio workshop series. DJs and producers from RTHK Radio 3 would provide on-campus training to encourage all-round creativity and radio delivery. The 10 selected schools (including our school) would receive tailor-made on-campus training, a guided tour of RTHK as well as in-studio training. Our work will be aired on RTHK Radio 3’s Teen Time. One of my most unforgettable experience of this activity was character playing. For the topic Unsung Hero, we chose the African American female scientists from NASA to be our target. We had to play different characters like DJs, an African American female scientist and a receptionist of NASA. It was such a big challenge, but we all gave our very best and had lots of fun. The process of radio recording and editing was really impressive! Another unforgettable experience was that we had a really interesting on-campus training. Alyson Hau, a famous radio DJ, taught us how to use a water bottle cap to improve our pronunciation and increase our speech clarity. When we were doing that exercise, we couldn’t even control our tongues. That was really awkward but fun! We also did a physical practice about how to use our “dan tian” to talk and breathe. That was a fresh experience for us. Speaking of my feelings and things I’ve learnt from this activity, honestly, I was a little bit anxious at the beginning since it was a formal competition. We would face different opponents from different secondary schools in Hong Kong. And the only experience I’ve had as a DJ was doing radio shows at school. But after the competition, I found that it was not that scary to participate in a public competition. The competition has increased my confidence and my ability to express myself. It has also made me realize the importance of teamwork. I am thankful that I was offered this invaluable opportunity to join the activity. I’d like to express my gratitude to my teammates and the teachers who continue to give active and full support!
